Planning for New York

It has been a crazy month. We spent two weeks getting our house ready to list, and after two more weeks, we decided to move forward with one of three offers. We're under contract now, but of course, that doesn't mean there haven't been additional hurdles along the way. I'm not going to get into all of that craziness, just know, it's all being taken care of and the new owners are getting shiny new plumbing. And I thought buying a home was stressful ... we've learned our lesson. Next time around (like ten years from now), Keith and I will know a whole lot more.

In the meantime, I've also been trying to prepare for joining Keith and moving to New York in a few weeks. I can't believe I'll be there in July! I've been so busy with all the house prep, packing, selling furniture, etc that I haven't even had that much time to prepare for the actual moving part. But I guess that's what makes it a truly crazy, exciting adventure, right?

Keith and I occasionally look at apartments in areas of Brooklyn we like and send each other links of our favorites. Keith has even gone to a few open houses, but most don't look quite as nice or large as the photos. We've been using the Naked Apartments (promise not a joke site) and Street Easy apps to search, but we'll probably wind up hiring a realtor or broker to help us. Of course we'd prefer to avoid paying those additional fees, but apartment searching in New York feels like it could become a full-time job. We're really excited about the idea of living in Brooklyn, but we also plan to look into Long Island and Queens as well since we've heard a lot of good things about areas there too. I know it's going to take time to adjust to New York pricing, and apartment renting again, but I'm really looking forward to no longer having all the expenses of owning a home. Maybe they balance each other out?

I can't wait to find our first long-term apartment in New York, share before and after decorating pictures, and tips on customizing a rental space. In the meantime, send lots of positive vibes our way that all goes through smoothly with closing on the house in the coming weeks. My posts may continue to be few and far between for the next month or so, but I hope to start writing more regularly once I'm settled in New York and have more exciting updates to share!
