A College Student's Home

Several months ago, I blogged about the fact that my younger sister was planning to move off campus and shared an initial design board for her place with a friend. Well a lot has changed since then and just a few days ago, she signed for and got the keys for an adorable house near her school. The house is about 700 square feet with stone exterior, a huge yard for her two dogs, wood planked interior walls and a nice-sized front porch.

Since the plan and set-up changed slightly, I decided to update her design board for the living room, and am working on more ideas for the bedroom, bathroom and dining room/kitchen combo space. My sister is studying design so she's creative, likes patterns and fun colors, but is also very outdoorsy and loves animals. To play into the natural planked walls and look of the space, I decided to go with a more natural/modern look so I hope to bring in some wildlife decor with lots of bright, fun prints.

The house comes with a futon, but we might try to find a fun cover or throw for it. I gave her an old leather chair (that needs a new cover) and I'm planning to give her a colorful pouf currently residing in our sunroom. I'm between giving her our current coffee and side tables (and building new ones) or building her entirely new pieces like the ones above. I LOVE that metallic cow skull and think it would look great over her fireplace or among an assortment of wall decor above her futon.

Her fireplace doesn't actually work so I pitched the idea of putting a variety of candles in there to her and she loved it. I'm thinking something like this:

I think a really large landscape or animal picture on one of the living room walls would bring everything together, and I'd love to incorporate some of her photos in the space, along with items we made for her last apartment. I've never gotten to decorate a fireplace or mantel before, so I'm excited to start brainstorming ideas for that space (and those built in shelves on either side). I've been thinking of making a feather garland for the fireplace and filling the shelves with multicolored glass vases and ceramic animals. I'll definitely be checking out some potential decor at Round Top this weekend.

I'm going to see the house for the first time this Thursday and will then start working on design plans for the other rooms. For now, I'm picturing a wooden headboard for her new queen bed, burlap curtains for those big windows, a plank desk stained a light gray and a brightly colored desk chair, a removable patterned wallpaper for her bathroom ceiling, a patterned cushion for the dining bench, a burlap runner for the kitchen table, and yellow cafe curtains on the doors. I'm also hoping the landlord approves repainting the front door because I think a deep red or bright yellow would look so cute on this house!
