An Anniversary Road Trip

As I mentioned in a previous post, last week was our three-year wedding anniversary so we decided to take a mini road trip this past weekend. We stayed at the Old Kasper House Bed & Breakfast in Shiner, Texas for the weekend. They have several options for accommodations but we stayed in their main house and enjoyed the decor and quiet space.

We love staying in bed and breakfasts and have stayed in many all over the country over the years. The Kasper B&B had a beautiful exterior, and the rooms were nicely decorated, but it is on the lower end of our favorites lists due to the "breakfast" portion - packaged pastries, cheap coffee, and sugary boxed cereal set out each day. If you stay, I recommend planning in advance and packing your own breakfast or finding a cute local place to eat (which is what we did). Aside from that, we had a wonderful weekend. We spent Saturday driving to the nearby towns of Flatonia, Praha, Schulenberg and Halletsville. We toured painted churches, polka museums, walked through tiny parks and historic downtowns, dug through antiques, saw a movie at a tiny old theatre, and enjoyed some small-town home cooking. Then we headed back to Shiner for beer tasting at the Spoetzl Brewery. Prepare for a photo overload.

On Sunday, we drove through Lockhart on our way back to Austin and stopped at Smitty's for some amazing barbecue. There are lots of great options for barbecue in Lockhart but we took friend's recommendations and went with Smitty's. Boy are we glad we did! Their brisket was the best we've ever had, the jalapeno sausage was delicious, and we even shared some ribs as well. We've been eating leftovers for dinner every night this week and they're still moist and tasty. It's gotten us excited to do a Texas barbecue tour at some point.

It was a lovely weekend and I'm already looking forward to whatever adventure we take to celebrate next year! I'm also excited to share photos of the gifts we made for each other in a crafting post in a few days and at the end of this month, update you on my month of meditating.
